Slam is author Nick Hornby's first foray in to Young Adult fiction. His previous work has always featured adults making their way in the world (and have also been made into movies like About a Boy*, High Fidelity, and Fever Pitch). Slam is about two young people who make adult decisions and have to live with the adult consequences, specifically becoming parents at the age of 16 and how that changes everything.
Lighthearted in the way all of Hornby's books are, but deep enough to show their is more to life than sex - more to sex than sex for that matter. Even though things do not work out for our young couple they still work out a little too neatly for my liking, but still a great book.
*About a Boy is one of the very few movies in which I found it as good as the book. The ending is imho better than the book.
