Dinosaur Trees

Mindless Eating
by Brian Wansink

This is a brilliant book that everyone should read. It humorously provides example after example of how we all fool ourselves and eat much more than we think we do. Like the soup bowl that always kept refilling itself, people ate on average twice as much, ignoring any internal clues and just eating to finish. Time and time again I would read passages out loud to Lisa because I recognized the behaviour.

My favorite study is where they were interviewing kids at preschools to see what foods they were taught to like at home. One school stood out because and inordinate amount of the kids loved broccoli. When asked they said because it was cool. Further questioning led them to two brothers aged 3 & 5. They said they liked it because they were dinosaur trees. They then went to the mother for another interview and she explained that she always told the boys that they were dinosaur trees, and they could be just like the long necked dinosaurs and eat the trees. Well to the 3-5 year old age group, nothing is cooler than being a dinosaur; thus a whole community of kids loved broccoli.

***DEEP THOUGHT*** Which goes to show that anybody can change the world if they just push the right buttons.

Anyways, if you want to learn more go to his website or look up mindless eating on YouTube. Here is an example.
