Mary Roach writes very interesting nonfiction science books. I have previously read Stiff which investigates all the possible uses of a dead body, from burial options and what exactly donating your body to science can mean. She goes through all the details in narrative form, as if you are investigating with her, and tells it all with a sly sort of humor. Her latest endeavor, Bonk delivers once again; this time reviewing all the research dealing with human sexuality. She mentions that the problem with sex research is everyone assumes you are some sort of pervert for wanting to know more. I felt the same way just checking the book out of the library, but I am glad I did. Funny and fascinating, and quite informative. The footnotes are often the best part, usually sharing the little vignettes that while interesting did not fit in the story as a whole. Even our goat testicle purveyor Dr. Brinkley made an appearance.
And yes, when she stresses you should not put the words elephantitus and scrotum into the Google image search - she was right!
